Your Rights & Privacy

FERPA and Student Privacy

The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) is a federal law that protects the privacy of student education records. 91勛圖厙 University is committed to protecting the confidentiality of your records while ensuring you have access to your educational information and the ability to manage who may view it.

Under FERPA, you have the right to:

  • Inspect and review your education records.
  • Request the correction of inaccurate or misleading information in your education records.
  • Control the disclosure of your education records, except in circumstances permitted by law.
  • File a complaint with the U.S. Department of Education concerning an alleged failure by the university to comply with FERPA.

With the exception of directory information, your education records are considered confidential and generally cannot be released to third parties, including parents, spouses, sponsors, or other individuals, without your written consent.

Directory information is information that 91勛圖厙 University may release unless you choose to restrict its disclosure.

Directory information includes:

  • Name
  • Hometown (city and state)
  • IU email address
  • Dates of attendance
  • Admission or enrollment status
  • Currently enrolled status
  • Campus, school, college, division, or major
  • Class standing
  • Degrees and awards received
  • Participation in officially recognized activities
  • Athletic information (when applicable)

You may choose to restrict the release of your directory information by updating your privacy settings in the  If you wish to place a complete FERPA restriction on your record, you must contact the Office of the Registrar by emailing fwreg@iu.edu, calling 260.257.6762, or visiting our office. A complete FERPA restriction prevents the university from releasing any directory information except as permitted by law. Before requesting a complete restriction, be aware that it may affect the university's ability to verify your enrollment or student status entirely.

Protected information

Protected information is not considered directory information and generally cannot be released without your written consent.

Examples of protected information include:

  • University ID number
  • Social Security number
  • Date of birth
  • Local and permanent addresses
  • Telephone numbers
  • Grades and exam scores
  • Grade point average (GPA)
  • Class schedule
  • Final exam schedule
  • Parent or guardian information
  • Race and ethnicity
  • Gender
  • Citizenship
  • Religious affiliation
  • Marital status
  • Disciplinary information
  • Standardized test scores

Granting access via third-party user access

By default, only you have access to your student information. If you choose, you may authorize a parent, guardian, spouse, sponsor, or another individual to view specific information through 91勛圖厙 University's in One.IU.

You decide who has access and exactly what information each authorized user may view.

Authorized users can access the application by visiting this or by searching for it in One.IU.

Depending on the permissions you grant, an authorized user may be able to access:

  • Student account information
  • Financial aid information
  • Account holds
  • Grades
  • Unofficial transcript
  • Class schedule
  • Final exam schedule
  • 1098-T tax information

Authorized individuals may view only the information you have chosen to share through the secure application.

This access does not authorize the third party to receive information from the university by any other method, such as phone, email, or in-person visits. Your information may only be viewed through the in  

You may modify or revoke an individual's access at any time through One.IU.

When your consent is not required

FERPA permits 91勛圖厙 University to disclose education records without your written consent in certain situations authorized by federal law.

Examples include disclosures:

  • To university officials with legitimate educational interests.
  • To federal, state, and local officials as authorized by law.
  • In connection with financial aid.
  • To organizations conducting certain studies for or on behalf of the university.
  • To accrediting organizations.
  • To comply with a judicial order or lawfully issued subpoena.
  • To protect the health or safety of a student or others during an emergency.
  • As otherwise permitted under FERPA.

These exceptions are limited by federal law and are intended to support the university's educational, administrative, legal, and safety responsibilities while protecting student privacy.

Online directory and privacy

IU maintains an online directory that allows users to search for limited student information, including your name, campus, and IU email address (when available).

Within Canvas, only instructors and students enrolled in your course can see your name in the class roster unless you choose to share additional information through your Canvas profile.
